Sloped Backyard Design Ideas

If your front or backyard includes a hill or hillside space, you need a landscape design plan that allows for maximum beauty with minimal maintenance. A sloped backyard comes alive with water-wise plants and clever landscaping. Boring backyard? Fix it with these great backyard landscaping ideas. There are many varieties of flowers and shrubs that thrive on slopes. If your steep hill gets full sun and doesn’t encounter an overwhelming amount of rain or water runoff, consider dotting it with thyme, the fragrant, delicate herb is easy to grow and blooms pink in the spring. For a gentle slope within a lawn, try terracing sections of the yard to create flower beds. Use landscaping pavers to create U-shaped tiers, which can be filled in with dirt or potting soil for plantings.

A sloping lawn became the inspiration for this backyard makeover that includes a pond, dining area with room for a grill; places for lounging and entertaining; a putting green; and an outdoor spa

Retaining wall idea: simple, inexpensive, durable, non-toxic, and easy to assemble retaining wall constructed using hollow concrete blocks. Because the blocks have been laid on their side, sloped backwards toward the hillside, you can plant vegetation in the their hollows exposed to the front. As vegetation is established, this will become a living wall. Similar technique to fashion steps as well.
